Indignation can be a great motivator for me and it's been at its goading
best since I recently attended a lecture on Deaf Culture. The guest speaker from
Deaf Aotearoa was telling us about deaf children in mainstream schools and
mentioned that some of them have a teacher-aide for only one hour a day.
Then our lecturer added that it was the same twenty years ago! I was
astounded and wondered how the education of generations of deaf children could
be neglected like this for so long and, more importantly, what was being done
about it?
In their latest Statement of Intent, the Ministry of Education acknowledges that the education system has not catered very well for "learners with special education needs" and refers to their new programme "Success for All - Every School, Every Child" where they undertake to provide educational settings of choice for these students in order for them to learn and succeed. I wondered, do our deaf students actually have much choice regarding their education? After looking into this issue, I don't believe they do.

Hi Jenette,
ReplyDeleteI think this is a good introduction, I like the background behind your opinion. You know I like your style of writing, it's very clear.
A couple of very minor things:
- might be good to link to the Deaf Aotearoa website to give a little context to the lecturer's background and approach. Also another link to add to the list!
- I would create a new paragraph at 'In their latest Statement of Intent', but I think this is a stylistic personal preference, and I think it's also fine as it is.
Okay, off to read your other posts now! :)
Julia
[Whoopee! My first comment - thank you, Julia :) Now I'd better get down to business!]
ReplyDeleteI'll take on board both your comments re a hyper link to Deaf Aotearoa and a new paragraph. Thanks.
